Conductor Bio:
Dr. Marsha Bryan Edelman earned degrees in general music, Jewish music and Jewish studies from Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, and over the years has taught Jewish music to students of all ages. In addition, she has been affiliated with the Zamir Choral Foundation in various musical and managerial capacities since 1971, and currently serves as Administrator of the Foundation as well as its Director of Education. For nearly 25 years, Dr. Edelman served as Professor of Music and Education at Gratz College (outside Philadelphia), and currently teaches as an adjunct faculty member at the Jewish Theological Seminary’s Miller Cantorial School. Beyond her teaching and administrative work, Dr. Edelman has had an active career as a musician. In addition to her work with HaZamir, she is the director of LaShir, a Jewish community chorus based in Princeton, NJ and conductor of Shirah: The Jewish Community Chorus of the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades in Tenafly, NJ. She has produced and arranged the vocal and instrumental scores for several recordings, and numerous choral selections for HaZamir and other ensembles. Dr. Edelman is also the author Discovering Jewish Music (Jewish Publication Society, 2003) as well as numerous articles for a wide range of national and international publications.
Elliot Roman is a multifaceted composer, pianist, flutist, and conductor. His compositions have been performed in the US and Europe and have won prizes in competitions including the BMI Student Composer Awards. He has received commissions from ensembles including American String Quartet, the New York Virtuoso Singers, and the National Orchestral Institute and Festival. Elliot played both flute and piano in the New York Youth Symphony, performing at Carnegie Hall, on CNN, and on tour in Spain. In 2021, Elliot founded underStaffed, a collective dedicated to the performance of works for chamber orchestra and small ensembles and serves as its Artistic Director and Conductor. He has premiered works by other emerging composers both with underStaffed and in programs such as the Carnegie Hall 2019 "Migrations" Festival. Within the Jewish music scene, Elliot is the pianist for the Zamir Chorale, the Jewish Theological Seminary H.L. Miller Cantorial School and the Reform Temple of Rockland in addition to his work with HaZamir Bergen County. Elliot is a current graduate student in composition at the Manhattan School of Music, where he also received his undergraduate degree and is a recipient of the Jay Rubinton Scholarship. www.elliotromanmusic.com
