Cantor Gabrielle Clissold, was ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City in 1998.
Cantor Clissold holds a B.A. in European History and a B.M. in Vocal Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During her year of study in Jerusalem at cantorial school, she studied with experts in Israeli art song and liturgy, Cilla Grossmeyer and Hazzan Naftali Hershtig, of the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem. For the past fifteen years she continues her weekly voice lesson with Professor Taina Kataja at Rutgers Mason Gross-School of the Arts.
Gabrielle began as a cantorial soloist and religious school teacher at Temple Emanu-El in Greensboro, North Carolina. From that experience as a soloist and a teacher; she decided to apply to Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion to become an ordained Cantor. While attending Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, she served as student cantor at Beth-El in Hillsborough, New Jersey. Upon graduation in 1998 Cantor Clissold served at Temple Judea in Coral Gables, Florida. Cantor Clissold has served as part of the clergy team at Monmouth Reform Temple since July of 2002.
Over the past fifteen years Cantor Clissold has overseen numerous ongoing projects in her synagogue and for the community. Cantor Clissold developed the 92nd St Y Lunch series at her synagogue. She teaches in her Temple religious school and at Solomon Schechter of Greater Monmouth County. She has developed their synagogue band called Shir Chadash. Some of her special interests include a love of Jewish choral music, contemporary Jewish music, teaching cantillation and the use of technology in worship. She organized and led a congregational trip to Israel. For the past seven years she has served on the faculty of URJ-Camp Harlam. She has been instrumental in her synagogue High School program using social action as experiential learning; teaches Jewish music, Hebrew, history and provides pastoral care for Monmouth Reform Temple. Her work serves as cornerstone of MRT’s caring community, ritual life and on-going study programs.
Cantor Clissold is honored and overjoyed to charter the new chapter of HaZamir Jersey Shore. She hopes teens in our area will take advantage of this exciting new opportunity!
